Sustainable development is the foundation of long-term value in the pharmaceutical business

28.11.2025

On November 24, 2025, a joint open meeting of the AEB AEB Sustainability Committee and the AEB Committee on Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals was held at the SKOLKOVO School of Management.

Tadzio Schilling, AEB CEO, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech.

The discussion was moderated by Roman Ishmukhametov, Chairman of the AEB AEB Sustainability Committee.

Experts from the Center for Sustainable Development and the Center for Healthcare Development of the SKOLKOVO School: Anastasia Opanasenko and Marina Veldanova made an opening presentation in the format of a keynote intervention on how sustainable development is integrated into and transforms the activities of pharmaceutical companies at various stages of value creation, including R&D, manufacturing, logistics, marketing, sales and disposal of medicinal products.

Representatives of AstraZeneca, Servier, Roche and BIOCAD outlined their strategies, essential business topics, and sustainability cases in relation to their core business and individual initiatives to improve the socio–ecological footprint of their operations.

Vladimir Gorchakov, Senior Director of the Sustainability Risk Assessment Group at the ACRA rating agency, spoke about which parameters of pharmaceutical companies' activities can determine their "sustainability".

The meeting participants agreed that sustainable development is a central element of pharmaceutical companies' business, affecting all their business processes in a cross—cutting line, creating long-term value for consumers and society as a whole through innovation, responsible production and ethical principles.

The dialogue organized by the two Committees was the first immersion into the topic of sustainable development in relation to the pharmaceutical industry, opening up space for further search for common ground for future joint "sustainable" initiatives of AEB member companies and external partnerships.
