10 components of our success – Pepeliaev Group’s anniversary

11.03.2012

Pepeliaev Group is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Over this time, the firm has cemented its position as one of the top law firms in Russia, offering its clients an international level of quality and service, high-level expertise in all areas of its work and an impeccable reputation. “We are always at the heart of things, and are conscious of our responsibility for each innovative solution we propose to our clients for non-standard matters,” asserts Sergey Pepeliaev, the managing partner of Pepeliaev Group. “Our priorities remain, as they always have been, to offer a tailored approach and integrated legal support, profound expertise, high-quality services, responsibility and effectiveness.”

Pepeliaev Group’s history began in 2002, when more than 20 professional tax and corporate lawyers who had been in practice since the 1990s joined forces in a single office. The firm’s initial clients were ZAO Hewlett-Packard AO, OAO GAZPROM, Mars, Danone-Bolshevik, ALROSA, and Kronospan. Over ten years, the firm has grown and developed along with its clients and the Russian economy, with the main practice areas being reinforced by the hiring of leading professionals in their own branches of the law. The firm has broadened its range of services considerably, at the same time maintaining the balance between the quality of its services and a reasonable pricing policy. This allows us to guarantee integrated support for the most complex Russian and international projects. Pepeliaev Group today has more than 160 lawyers, including 15 partners, spread across 15 practice areas and two offices – in Moscow, St Petersburg and Krasnoyarsk. The firm has more than 1,500 major Russian and international clients. Over the past decade, we have handled more than 5,000 major matters for clients, with a total value of more than USD 28 billion (including M&A transactions). When representing clients in court, Pepeliaev Group lawyers have achieved favourable outcomes in more than 96% of cases. Thanks to our extensive international links and membership in the associations TerraLex and Taxand, Pepeliaev Group has 200 international partners in 100 countries of the world.

Over the years, the firm has won more than 30 international awards and prizes in the legal business. It is recognised as a leading law firm by the international legal directories (Chambers, The Legal 500, PLC Which Lawyer, IFLR, World Tax et al.), and it has awards from The Best Russian Law Firm, RA Expert, International Legal Alliance Summit & Awards 2011, The Real Estate Market Records 2011, and The World Finance Awards 2010 among others.

Pepeliaev Group has the highest reputation on the legal services market based on the assessment of clients and its peers (the Pravo.ru-300 ratings, 2011).

Our outstanding expertise is confirmed by the ongoing academic work and research done by our lawyers. 26 of our employees are Doctors of Laws or hold PhDs in Law. Pepeliaev Group lawyers sit on the academic boards of Russia’s leading higher education institutions, act as opponents when candidates defend their theses, carry out expert reviews of legislation and court decisions as members of various expert councils, committees and commissions under the auspices of the State Duma and Federation Council, the Government, the Ministry of Finance, the Russian Chamber of Commerce, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Supreme State Commercial Court, the Supreme and Constitutional Courts and other state authorities at both federal and local levels. Over the past 10 years, Pepeliaev Group professionals have been involved as experts in preparing more than 50 drafts of key laws and regulations of various government departments and authorities (including the Tax Code, Civil Code, Budgetary Code, Customs Code, and the laws regarding the so-called ‘Green Corridor’, the 2018 Football World Cup and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics).

Pepeliaev Group’s lawyers have authored more than 100 books and textbooks. The firm publishes two periodical journals available throughout Russia – Nalogoved (from 2004) and Competition and Law (from 2010). The firm provides financial support for rare historical collections to be republished and for valuable manuscripts to be restored.

Pepeliaev Group is proud of Russia’s cultural heritage, and actively supports cultural and educational projects. The firm is a co-founder of the Kremlin Museum Assistance Fund, and its managing partner Sergey Pepeliaev serves on the Fund’s board of trustees.

As pro bono work Pepeliaev Group lawyers provided legal assistance to cultural and non-profit organisations. Among other things, we have protected the financial interests of: the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory; Lomonosov Moscow State University; the State Medical University; the Union of University Chancellors; the Medical Academy for Postgraduate Education; and the Lomonosov Moscow State Academy of High Chemical Technology, among others.

Pepeliaev Group helps its lawyers to achieve their potential, and to attain professional success. The partners and heads of practice areas continually pass on their experience within the firm, training both employees and students undertaking placements with the firm. One of the firm’s key principles is creating a legal culture and passing on the experience we have accumulated to all lawyers – both to experienced and recognised professionals, and students taking their first steps in the profession. In 2011, the 12th CIS Summit of HR Directors nominated Pepeliaev Group in the Education and Development category of the Best HR Project 2011 Awards.
Pepeliaev Group today is a full service law firm, offering integrated legal services for business: tax and tax disputes; corporate; commercial and M&A; antimonopoly regulation; real estate and construction; dispute resolution and mediation; intellectual property and trademarks; labour and migration; customs and foreign trade regulation; administrative and criminal defence of business; restructuring and insolvency; and sector-based specialist practices (including aviation, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, mineral extraction tax, direct private investment, and personal data protection).

“We set great store by each member of our professional team, the experience we have accumulated, our work with our partners, and we adhere strictly to the principles of responsibility, mutual respect and support. These have become the foundation stone of our relationship with clients and a guarantee of success in our work over all these years,” states Sergey Pepeliaev. According to Mr Pepeliaev, “The firm’s anniversary is an excellent reason for expressing our sincere gratitude to all our clients and business partners for the trust they have placed in us, and to look forward to for continued success.”
