Briefing by Vladimir Yakunin

January 22, 2008, Hotel Katerina, Nobel Hall

In the nineteenth century, the famous Russian writer Nikolai Gogol said that bad roads were Russia’s biggest problem.

Now, a century and a half later, we are going to take a look at how far we have progressed in creating a good quality transport network. Can Russia become a real superpower without a modern and hi-tech railway network? Infrastructure was the hottest topic during many of the summits, conferences, roundtables and other events in 2007. The success of many European companies working in Russia depends directly on this issue.

We have invited Vladimir Yakunin, Head of the state-run Russian Railways Company, to speak at an AEB open meeting, which will take place on January 22, 2008, from 14:00-15:30 (registration form from 13:30), at the Hotel Katerina, Nobel Hall, Schluzovaya Nab., 6/1

Vladimir Yakunin is a close ally of the Russian president Vladimir Putin and is considered to be one of the members of his inner circle. He is a graduate of the Leningrad Mechanical Institute, where he studied aircraft construction. Between 1985 and 1991 he was part of the Soviet diplomatic mission to the United Nations. From December 2000, Mr. Yakunin worked as Deputy, and then First Deputy to Russia’s Minister for Transport. In October 2003, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Russian Railways, before becoming Head in June 2005. Vladimir Yakunin is Chairman of the Trustees Committee of the Centre of the National Glory of Russia and the St. Andrew’s Foundation – both of which fund projects carried out by the Orthodox Church. Mr. Yakunin is also President of the “World Public Forum – Dialogue of Civilizations” – an initiative to link people of different civilizations, traditions and religions.
