20.02.2019

On February 19, 2019, AEB Board Chairman Johan Vanderplaetse and AEB CEO Frank Schauff took part in an extraordinary meeting of the International Council for Cooperation and Investments (ICCI) under the auspices of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP).

Other participants of the meeting were leaders of the largest foreign business associations, such as the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia (AmCham), the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK), the French-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIFR), and the representatives of the Presidential Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Entrepreneurs. The RSPP President A.Shokhin has chaired the meeting.

The participants discussed the risks and possible negative consequences for the Russian investment climate caused by the detention and arrest of the leaders of the Baring Vostok investment fund which could lead to a serious decline in Russia's investment attractiveness, especially for foreign companies considering to enter the Russian market. The speakers expressed their particular concern regarding the attempt to use criminal prosecution in the framework of a corporate conflict of shareholders in order to resolve an economic dispute.

The meeting resulted in a decision to appeal to the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin in order to verify the legitimacy and reasonableness of the prosecution against the Baring Vostok leadership and to change the imprisonnement to a milder measure.

Prior to the meeting The Association of European Businesses (AEB), the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce (AHK), the French-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI France Russie) and the Finnish-Russian Chamber of Commerce (SVKK) had published a common statement with regards to the situation around Baring Vostok Capital Partners investment fund and the arrest of some of its top-managers.
