AEB Session at INNOPROM-2020: ”The Paris Agreement: challenges and opportunities for the development of Russian industry”

On 30 June, 2020, the AEB held its session within INNOPROM Online 2020 business program, entitled ”The Paris Agreement: Challenges and Opportunities for the Development of Russian Industry”. 


The session was co-moderated by Michael Akim, AEB Board Member, Chairman of the AEB Modernisation & Innovations Working Group, and Anton Atrashkin, INNOPROM Business Program Director.

The session was focused on the following key topics:
- Russian attempt to deal with GHG  - compensating: i.e. forest for pollutions
- Difference in EU and Russian approach. Boarder adjustment tax
- Energy efficiency for GHG - incremental steps  - how sufficient
- Innovations and leapfrog - crucial but restricted

In particular, the following subjects were highlighted in the discussion: EU’s Green Deal and recovery plan and their relevance for Russia, carbon border adjustment mechanism, carbon footprint and its potential implications for the Russian exports, prospects for the implementation of Russia’s long-term low-carbon development strategy until 2050, state of play and trends in carbon pricing, investment in forest restoration as a way to reduce carbon footprint, pellets as an alternative fuel to coal, best available technology and energy efficiency for the reduction of GHG emissions, new technology and decarbonization road map in steel industry, global energy sector in transition: balance between the traditional fuel sources and renewables, carbon neutrality standards and net zero carbon emissions goals, programs aimed at reducing GHG emissions from the energy sector, smart grids, low-carbon and hydrogen energy potential, prospects for renewable energy development in Russia and the challenges related to renewables waste and soil sealing, digital technologies and predictive analytics for natural disaster predictions and calculation of potential risks.
