Mass media and elections: forth power or...?
Briefing by Alexey Venediktov, Editor-in-chief, Echo of Moscow

As a reporter, Alexei Venediktov proved to be brave yet untheatrical. He certainly does not count as a post-Soviet dissident (or even a partisan activist). He is, rather, a professional, which he defines as "a journalist devoted to open inquiry and discussion". Since 1990, Alexei Venediktov has been working for the Echo of Moscow radio station. He started as a newspaper columnist and reporter (he was in the White House during the confrontation of President Boris Yeltsin and the Supreme Council), then he became a political columnist, led the news service and, finally, in February 1998 he was elected to the position of Editor-in-Chief.

Under Venediktov’s canny direction, the Echo of Moscow is now described as "the last bastion of free media in Russia". Most of the radio station's content consists of news and talk shows focusing on social and political issues.

In October, Alexei Venediktov will talk about the role of media in the pre-election period in Russia.
