For the first time since 2013, Moscow city government will issue obligations worth more than 600bn rubles by 2023, one third of which will be classified as “Green”. The issuance is expected for the first half of 2021 and will be executed on the Moscow stock exchange. It is of importance for the city hall, that investors from abroad subscribe the ruble-based “green bonds”, which would increase the image of Moscow and lift the liquidity of the MOEX.
Moscow is expected to use the funds generated through “green bond” issuance to invest even more in green technologies such as electric buses, in future maybe also green hydrogen and renewable energies. This still requires purchasing of European technologies since competitive Russian technologies are not yet available. In that sense, AEB members from the industrial sector might be interested to learn more about the investment programs of the Moscow transport department, while the banking-related could figure out cooperation potential regarding the bond issuance itself.
