Event information

The AEB is pleased to invite you to a briefing by Alexei Arbatov, “Press the Reset Button? Russian-American Relations under the Obama Administration ”, organized on March 4th, 2009, Hotel “Arbat”, hall “Scriabine”, Plotnikov per., 12, from 17:00 pm to 18:30 pm (registration starts from 16:30 pm).

The question regarding the importance of the Russo-American relations is a rhetorical one. Russo-American relations are vital to the world order and equilibrium of the international relations. In the time of the Bush administration, they were far from being excellent. Many hopes were put in the election of a new American President. Will our expectations be realised? Is it really possible “to press the reset button”, as the American Vice-president suggested,or are the differences between two countries too strong, will the struggle for the zones of “vital interests” eventually dominate? The triangle – the common economic space between the US, Russia and the EU, which was mentioned by Minister Lavrov during his meeting with the AEB members, is it feasible?

We have invited Alexei Arbatov, one of the best specialists in the matter, to help us answer these questions. Following President Obama’s election, he has made several professional trips to the US.

A. Arbatov is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the International Center of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of RAS, member of the Russian Council for Foreign & Defense Policy as well as of many reputed international organizations. He was deputy of the RF State Duma (YABLOKO). He cooperated also with Carnegie Moscow Center. Arbatov is the author of many books and numerous articles and papers on global security, strategic stability, disarmament, Russian military reform and various current domestic and foreign policy issues.
