The AEB is pleased to invite you to take part in the open event dedicated to “The geopolitical uncertainty and its possible consequences”.

The event will be held on February 04, 2022 from 10:00 to 12:00 online via Zoom.

In December 2021, the European Council announced that “any further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine will have massive consequences and severe costs.” This pledge was reiterated at the European Council meeting with U.S. President Biden on 24 January 2022. On the same day, the Commission has announced that it working together with the EEAS on a wide array of sectoral and individual sanctions in the case of further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

On several occasions, the Biden administration has also warned Moscow of “severe economic costs” if Russia invades and on January 12, the U.S. Senate Democrats introduced the Defending Ukraine Sovereignty Act of 2022 (“DUSA”) which would require the White House to impose sanctions on senior Russian government officials and certain Russian financial institutions, cut off those financial institutions from SWIFT and other financial messaging services, prohibit U.S. persons from engaging in transactions involving new Russian sovereign debt, sanction parties involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and potentially sanction additional Russian extractive industries.

Days of failed talks have made the situation extremely volatile with the probability of further economic, financial and sectoral sanctions higher than before.

What is the current geopolitical situation? What are the possible political motives behind the crisis? What could be the EU and U.S. responses to a possible military conflict? What would be the consequences for the Russian economy and the European businesses working in and with Russia? These are the questions our experts will try to answer during this webinar.

The working languages of the event are English and Russian, interpretation will be provided.
