Moscow, Seoul and Shanghai coped with coronavirus the best

08.09.2020

Moscow is among the megalopolises that most effectively coped with difficulties during the pandemic. This is evidenced by the results of the study "World Cities: The Effectiveness of Economic Policy Measures during the Coronacrisis", prepared by the researchers from the Higher School of Economics (HSE), Vedomosti quotes.

Experts assessed 15 cities of the world on three parameters: the situation on the labor market, the recovery of economic activity after the lifting of restrictions and the level of digital infrastructure. The analysts assigned the highest grade on them to Seoul and Shanghai, and Moscow took the third line of the rating. The outsiders of the rating were Montreal, Berlin, London, Madrid and Paris.

The efficiency of Moscow, Shanghai and Singapore is primarily due to the fact that they managed to maintain stability in the labor market and quickly restart the economy after the withdrawal of self-identification, analysts point out. European cities found themselves in a losing position, as they had high unemployment rates even before the pandemic. In addition, they have a higher share of the service sector in employment, namely, consumer services were most affected during the quarantine.
